Yesterday,Tuesday all of us crammed into dads car and drove to the town of Mesta on Chios.
It's a bit of a drive there but very interesting.
I have been there many years ago, but this was something I had looked forward to.
2 good reasons, the old stle the town is build like and the 2 churches Mesta town got.
Mesta town is build like a fortress and as I understand this was to protect them against pirates and other villains in the past.
Keep them out.
When we walked there we (Roshini&I) was amazed over how narrow it was between the houses and across the streets.
Over to the interesting parts.
Mesta got 2 nice churches.
One church dating from the Byzantine period, the oldest church, documented around 1412 but possible older.
It had nice paintings and in 1821/22 during the attack by the Moslems from the Ottman empire, they(Turks) tried to destroy specifically the eyes of Lord Jesus and the apostles. Could still see the bullets holes.
New church
Mesta also got 1 newer church which is from 1868, and it took 10 years to complete.
The church is dedicated to the the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The locals refer to the church as "Megalos Taksiarhis" (the big Archangels Church), in order to distinguish it from the older temple in the village. The paintings inside are fantastic.
The silver and gold and artworks are breathtaking.
And then we left Mesta, after mum and I had time to drink a Frape.
Kids had to have ice cream, but it made them happy.
